Individual Events, Debate, Theatre, and Middle Level competitions
Individual Events
MIFA's Individual Events program encompasses 14 competitive events across Speaking and Interpretation categories. Students prepare and perform original and scripted material, judged on delivery, content, and craft. IE is the cornerstone of Michigan forensics, offering an event for every student's strengths.
Debate
MIFA sanctions two debate formats: Lincoln-Douglas, which pits one debater against another on a value/criterion resolution, and Parliamentary debate, a team format that emphasizes quick reasoning and argumentation. Both formats develop rigorous research skills, logical argumentation, and in-round adaptability.
Theatre
Competitive theatre puts performance craft at the center. MIFA Theatre events include solo and group performance categories drawn from the dramatic literature canon, with an emphasis on character development, staging, and ensemble work. Theatre competition provides a bridge between forensics and the performing arts.
Middle Level
The Middle Level program brings structured speech competition to students in grades 6–8. Events mirror the IE program at an age-appropriate level, giving younger students a pathway into forensics before high school. Middle Level competition culminates in its own State Finals each spring.
