MIFA Theatre competition brings the rigor of forensics to the craft of theatrical performance. Unlike the interpretive restraint required in Individual Events, Theatre events permit fuller staging — costumes, props, and movement are part of the evaluated performance. Competitors are judged on acting craft, directorial vision, and the quality of the theatrical experience they create for their audience.
Theatre events are drawn from published dramatic literature. Solo performers demonstrate character depth and range within a single excerpt; group entries must coordinate ensemble performance, blocking, and the collaborative dimensions of stagecraft. Judges evaluate both the artistic quality of the performance and the competitors’ command of the theatrical form.
MIFA Theatre serves as a bridge between the speech and performing arts communities. Many Theatre competitors also participate in IE events such as Dramatic Interpretation or Duo, and the skills transfer in both directions — Theatre builds the physical and vocal range that enriches interpretive events, while IE builds the precision of individual performance that elevates ensemble work.
Solo Theatre
A single performer presents a scene or monologue from published dramatic literature. Costumes and props are permitted within MIFA guidelines. Judging focuses on characterization, physical and vocal expression, and service to the text.
Group Theatre
Two or more performers present a scene from published dramatic literature. Judging adds ensemble coordination and directorial coherence to the individual performance criteria. Group entries are evaluated as a unified theatrical presentation.
