“Empowering students since 1917.”

108 years of Michigan forensics

The Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association was founded in 1917 by a coalition of Michigan high school administrators and speech teachers who recognized competitive speech as an essential academic discipline. From its earliest tournaments in the 1920s through the postwar expansion of the 1950s and 1960s, MIFA grew to serve students across every corner of the state — from Detroit’s urban schools to small rural programs in the Upper Peninsula.

Through the latter half of the twentieth century, MIFA formalized the event structures that define Michigan forensics today: a 14-event Individual Events program spanning Speaking and Interpretation categories, structured Debate formats including Lincoln-Douglas and Parliamentary, competitive Theatre events, and a Middle Level division designed to introduce speech competition to students in grades 6–8.

Today MIFA serves 147 member schools across seven geographic regions, administering a full season of invitationals, district competitions, regional championships, and State Finals. The Forensic Council — composed of member school representatives from each region — governs the association, ensuring that MIFA’s rules and structures reflect the needs and values of Michigan’s forensics community.

Empowerment

MIFA believes every student deserves the opportunity to find and develop their voice. Through structured competition, students gain confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills that last a lifetime.

Ethical Communication

The core MIFA standard: students learn not just how to speak effectively, but how to speak honestly, responsibly, and with respect for their audience and opponents.

Educational Excellence

Forensics is academic preparation. MIFA structures its events and rules to reinforce rigorous research, careful preparation, and the discipline that transfers directly to college and professional success.
